countenance 表情。這個字的結構，也就是字首、字根、字尾，分別是 con-、ten、-ance。
coun 同 con，是「一起」(together)、「有」(with) 的意思；
ten 同 tain，是「維持」(hold)的意思；
ance 則是有「擁有某性質」(quality of) 的意思。
countenance 原意是「一起或全部維持某種特性」，延伸為「一直保持住臉部表情」，簡稱「表情」，比起 appearance 或 expression 來說，是比較少用的字。
